App to track amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) disease progression. To facilitate frequent patient evaluations without the need for clinic visits, software engineers from the Kata Project at Johns Hopkins Neurology built a custom app, “Help us Answer ALS”. The app includes seven task modules specifically designed to test the participant’s physical and cognitive state. Modules 1-6 assess fine motor skills via finger tap and trace exercises. The seventh module is designed to collect voice/breath recordings and is comprised of three parts; i) speech assessment (user is prompted to read a phrase) ii) cognitive assessment (user is prompted to describe a picture/scene in his/her own words and iii) breathing assessment (user is prompted to take a deep breath and count as high as possible before running out of breath). The app is designed to record responses and upload to cloud storage.
